Helping the Forgotten Babies of Bulgaria
Sponsor a New Cot
Earlier this year, after the showing on television a programme titled ‘The Forgotten Children of Bulgaria’ depicting some of the harrowing images of life in a Bulgarian orphanage/institution, it was considered that it may be time to think of Bulgaria as an alternative destination for a future convoy.
In partnership with One Life Bulgaria (www.onelifebulgaria.org) and The Lora Foundation (http://lorafoundation.co.za/) CWUHA are sending a 10 vehicle convoy in September delivering aid to orphanages, children’s hospital and a school in northern Bulgaria.
Momentously, for the first time this will include volunteers from the Communication Workers Union in Eire and Northern Ireland. Driving sponsored trucks from Eircom and An Post, to add to our usual trucks donated by BT, Royal Mail and Parcel Force. Also, around half of the 20 volunteers will be new drivers including two drivers from Simpson Millar, proving that we’re going from strength to strength, with lots of enthusiasm and inspiration to continue the work that CWUHA has been doing for 13 years.
The convoy will be focusing on orphanages in Samkov, Pleven, Razdavitsa and Panagyurshte which caters for nearly 1,000 children and babies many of whom are disabled, a children’s hospital that looks after 250 children and a school that educates 75 orphans. The levels of finance received from the state only covers basic standards of care and safety and additional resources are needed to stimulate the children and improve their standard of living.
In the orphanage at Pleven hundreds of babies and disabled children sleep in cots that resemble cages or with solid sides, making them look like boxes, unable to see or interact with any of the other children in the same room, they just laid there not moving around like one would expect children to do.
Speaking following his recent visit to Bulgaria Alex Pearson, national organiser for aid with CWUHA stated “It was so surprising to walk into a room full of babies & young children where there were no cries, no laughter, not a sound. It’s just heartbreaking. The children are badly in need of stimulation and aid. We have compiled a list of urgently needed items and the children will be grateful for any assistance that can be provided to our helpers in gathering together this aid.”
