Report for Communications Workers Union Humanitarian Aid

April 2006

Distribution of humanitarian aid received by EveryChild Ukraine

Despite recent economic development, the transformation to a market economy has had a dramatic overall effect on the living standards of Ukrainian citizens. 13 years after independence, Ukraine still has a high and annually increasing poverty rate. 27.8% of Ukrainians (over 13.7 million) live below the official poverty line. However, according to public surveys, 83% of the Ukrainian population currently view themselves as ‘poor’.  Ukraine also has high levels of inequality within its population in terms of income and consumption level, this inequality having substantially increased in recent years. Over the past 10 years, the population of Ukraine has decreased by more than 4.2 million people, the birth rate has decreased by 38.5% and the death rate increased by 26.5%.

All of these changes that have taken place in Ukraine since transition have dramatically affected the vast majority of families and communities. One of the reasons for children being admitted to institutional care is family poverty. Overcoming this negative phenomenon is one of the main components of EveryChild’s activity in Ukraine. As part of this work we coordinate the distribution of humanitarian aid in Lviv, Kyiv and Chernihiv oblasts, which we receive from our partner organizations. In particular we are very grateful for the generous support of the Communication Workers Union Humanitarian Aid (CWUHA).

The most substantial part of the humanitarian aid delivered by CWUAH was received by EveryChild in Lviv oblast.
