CWU Humanitarian Aid Deliver hope to children in Bulgaria

On Friday 12th September, a group of Postal & Telecom workers and members of the Communication Workers Unions of Great Britain and the Republic of Ireland along with Representatives from Simpson Millar one of the Unions  Solicitors delivered over £250,000 of Humanitarian Aid to four orphanages a school and baby hospital in Bulgaria.

With fantastic financial support from the Communication Workers Union in Ireland we delivered: cots, incubators, medical equipment, school desks, weight gain products, baby milk, food, shoes, paint, cleaning products and clothes that had been raised over the last 12 months. Each of the institutions visited had provided a list of desperately needed equipment which the charity and dozens of volunteers back in the UK and Ireland had worked tirelessly to fulfil

Without the generous support of Royal Mail, BT, Eircom and An Post who provided vehicles, fuel and time off for the drivers this convoy would not have been possible. It is a great example of Employers and the Trade Unions putting aside industrial differences to work together to deliver aid and hope to needy children.

The aid was delivered by the drivers personally to ensure that it went directly to the institutions themselves.

The convoy featured on Bulgarian national TV and in other countries around Central Europe, Ted Stead CWUHA National President said:-

“Not only have we delivered hope to these disadvantaged children but we have raised awareness of the problem both in Bulgaria and surrounding countries. Already other charitable organisations have been in touch with our partners in Bulgaria, One Life for Bulgaria & Lora’s Foundation to find out how they can help”.

Our sincerest thanks to Lora’s Foundation, One Life for Bulgaria, CWU Branches, CWU Members and their families & friends, Quadrant, CWFS, Walker Smith Way, Bishops, MPH, Edwards Duthie (union solicitors), trade unions, Royal Mail, BT, Eircom & An Post and many more who helped us deliver a smile to hundreds of needy children in Bulgaria.
